How to convert MP4 to FLAC

Open an MP4 and save its sound as FLAC, which keeps every bit of the decoded sound in about half the space of a WAV. It suits archiving a concert recording or bringing a video's sound into an audio editor. MOV, MKV, and WebM videos work too. The conversion runs in your browser, so the video never leaves your device.

  1. Step 1

    Choose your MP4
Pick a video, or drop it above.
  2. Step 2

    Keep FLAC
FLAC is selected; choose WAV or MP3 if you need one.
  3. Step 3

    Download the FLAC
Save the lossless sound when it finishes.

What to expect

Supported inputs
MP4 videos, and MOV, MKV, WebM, and other readable video or audio files.
What happens
The picture is left out and the first sound track is decoded and saved as FLAC. FLAC is selected first; you can choose WAV, MP3, or another format.
Limits
Only one sound track is saved. FLAC can't bring back detail the MP4's own sound already left out.

Questions

The FLAC is an exact copy of the sound as it's decoded from the MP4. Most MP4s hold AAC sound, which is lossy, so FLAC keeps it from losing more but can't restore what AAC left out.

AAC throws detail away to stay small; FLAC keeps everything it's given, so it's usually several times larger.
