How to make a ringtone from a song

Open a song, an MP3, or a video with music in it. Move the highlighted part to the bit you want to hear when your phone rings, add a fade out so it doesn’t stop suddenly, and choose iPhone or Android. iPhone ringtones are M4R files of 40 seconds or less, and Android phones play MP3. The ringtone maker runs in your browser, without GarageBand or an app.

  1. Step 1

    Choose a song
An MP3, M4A, or other song, or a video.
  2. Step 2

    Pick the part
Up to 40 seconds, with a fade out so it ends softly.
  3. Step 3

    Save the ringtone
An M4R for iPhone, or an MP3 for Android.

What to expect

Supported inputs
MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, and other songs this browser’s engine can read, and videos with sound.
What happens
For iPhone, the part is saved as AAC sound in an .m4r file. For Android, it’s saved as an MP3, copied without re-encoding when the song is already an MP3 and there’s no fade.
Limits
An iPhone ringtone can be up to 40 seconds long, and a longer one won’t be added. Firefox has no AAC encoder, so make iPhone ringtones in Chrome, Edge, or Safari.

Questions

Connect the iPhone to a computer, open it in Finder on a Mac or in iTunes on Windows, and drag the M4R onto it. Then choose it in Settings, under Sounds & Haptics, Ringtone.

Save the MP3 to your phone, then open Settings, Sound, and Phone ringtone, and pick it from your files. Some phones list it under Sounds and vibration.

Up to 40 seconds on an iPhone. Android has no limit, but 20 to 30 seconds covers a call.

Yes. Make the M4R here, then add it to your iPhone from a computer. GarageBand is only needed to make one on the iPhone alone.
