MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, and other audio, or a video with sound.

How to compress a WAV file

Open the WAV and choose whether it stays a WAV or becomes an MP3. Kept as a WAV, it’s made smaller with a lower sample rate or one channel, which suits voice recordings, phone systems, and games that only take WAV. As an MP3, it plays everywhere at about a tenth of the size. Choose Size in MB to fit an upload limit, and the best quality that fits is picked for you.

  1. Step 1

    Choose the WAV
A recording, song, or sound effect.
  2. Step 2

Keep it a WAV, or make an MP3
A WAV at a lower sample rate, or an MP3 a tenth of the size.
  3. Step 3

    Download it
The smaller file, with its size next to the original’s.

What to expect

Supported inputs
WAV files of any bit depth, and other audio this browser’s engine can read, which is saved as an MP3.
What happens
Kept as a WAV, the sound is saved as 16-bit PCM: Best sound keeps the sample rate up to 48 kHz, Balanced is 22 kHz, and Smallest is 16 kHz mono. To fit a size limit it can go down to 8 kHz mono. As an MP3, it’s 128, 96, or 64 kb/s.
Limits
The sound inside a WAV isn’t compressed, so a WAV only gets smaller by keeping less: fewer samples a second, one channel, or 16-bit samples. Only the main sound track is kept.

Questions

Choose MP3 for the biggest saving, about a tenth of the size. To keep it a WAV, choose Balanced or Smallest, which lower the sample rate and can make it mono.

Yes. Leave Save as on WAV. A 44.1 kHz stereo WAV is half the size at 22 kHz, and about a fifth at 16 kHz mono.

Yes, a little. At 22 kHz voices stay clear, but music loses its brightness, and 16 kHz mono suits speech only. For music, an MP3 keeps more of the sound at a smaller size.

Yes. There’s no sign-up or watermark, and your WAV is never uploaded.
