MPEG to WAV

Convert MPEG to WAV for free: save the sound from a .mpg, .mpeg, or .vob video, or an MPEG audio file, as a WAV for editing. Nothing is uploaded, and there's no watermark.

How to convert MPEG to WAV

Open an MPEG file from a DVD, TV recorder, or camcorder (.mpg, .mpeg, .vob, .m2p) and save its sound as an uncompressed WAV that Audacity, Premiere, and every audio editor opens. An MP3 or other MPEG audio file converts to WAV the same way. The file is read in your browser, so it's never uploaded, however large it is.

  1. Step 1

    Choose your MPEG
Pick a .mpg, .mpeg, .vob, or .m2p file, or drop it above.
  2. Step 2

    Keep WAV
WAV is selected; choose MP3 or another format for a smaller file.
  3. Step 3

    Download the WAV
Save the sound when the conversion finishes.

What to expect

Supported inputs
MPEG program streams (.mpg, .mpeg, .vob, .m2p) with MP2, MP3, Dolby Digital, or DTS sound, MP3 files, and other readable video or audio files.
What happens
The picture is left out and the first sound track is decoded and saved as an uncompressed WAV. WAV is selected first; you can choose MP3 or another format.
Limits
Only the sound is saved: Mastershot can't convert MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video yet. DVD sound in LPCM can't be read yet either. A WAV is several times larger than the MPEG's sound.

Questions

WAV stores sound uncompressed, so it's several times the size of the MP2 or MP3 sound in the MPEG. Editors like that; for a small file, choose MP3 instead.

Yes, if it isn't copy-protected. Copy the VOB from the disc's VIDEO_TS folder and open it here.

Not yet. No browser decodes MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video, so only the sound is saved.
