How to compress a MOV file

Open a MOV, choose a smaller, balanced, or higher-quality export, and compare the original and finished sizes. The MOV compressor works on your device, so a long iPhone video never has to upload.

  1. Step 1

    Choose a MOV
Pick the MOV file you want to make smaller.
  2. Step 2

    Choose the quality
Select the size and quality balance you prefer.
  3. Step 3

    Download the result
Compare the sizes and save the smaller MOV.

What to expect

Supported inputs
MOV files from iPhones, Macs, and cameras, and any other video this browser can read.
What happens
The video is saved again as a MOV. Smaller makes the biggest cut and brings the picture down to 720p, Balanced keeps most of the detail at up to 1080p, and Higher stays closest to the original at up to 4K. You only get the file if it ends up smaller than the original.
Limits
Codec support and large-file capacity depend on your browser and device memory. If the encoder overshoots the source size, the export fails instead of returning a larger file.

Questions

iPhones record at high bitrates, often 4K at 30 or 60 fps, so a minute of video can take several hundred megabytes. Balanced brings a 4K recording down to 1080p, which usually cuts the size a lot with little visible loss.

Yes. It opens in QuickTime, Photos, iMovie, and Final Cut like the original. If you need an MP4 instead, use MOV to MP4, then compress the MP4.

Use a compress-to-size page, such as 25 MB, when an email or upload form has a limit. Those pages check the finished size; this one is for choosing a quality level.
