Discord file size limits
Discord limits the size of each file you upload. The limit depends on your account and on the server you’re posting in, and Discord uses whichever is higher.
| Account or server | Largest file |
|---|---|
| Free account | 20 MB |
| Nitro Basic | 50 MB |
| Nitro | 500 MB |
| Server boosted to Level 2 | 50 MB for everyone in it |
| Server boosted to Level 3 | 100 MB for everyone in it |
Discord raised the free limit from 10 MB to 20 MB on August 13, 2026. Advice that still says 8 MB, 10 MB, or 25 MB is from before that.
On phones, Discord now checks the original file’s size before it compresses anything, the same way the desktop app does. A long phone video has to be under 20 MB before you send it.
If a video still won’t fit, trim it to the part you want to share, or upload it to a cloud drive and post the link instead.
How to send a video on Discord without Nitro
Discord caps uploads at 20 MB unless you subscribe to Nitro. Compress the clip here to your plan’s limit, then drag it into any channel or DM. MP4 with H.264 plays inline on desktop, web, and mobile.

What to expect
- What happens
- The video is re-encoded to an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, the most widely playable combination. Bitrate and resolution are chosen from the size budget, and the finished file is measured before you can download it.
- Good to know
- Discord sets limits by account and server boost level, and it has changed them before. Short clips keep the most detail at 20 MB. For longer videos, trim first or choose a higher limit if you have one.
