How to post a large video on Reddit

Reddit lets you upload videos up to 1 GB and 15 minutes long in a post, and up to 3 minutes in a comment, where it recommends staying under 300 MB. Compress the video here to fit, then upload it to Reddit; an H.264 MP4 plays in the post on every app.

  1. Step 1

    Choose a video
Pick the video you want to prepare for Reddit.
  2. Step 2

    Choose a size
Select the Reddit limit that applies to you.
  3. Step 3

    Download the MP4
Save the video after its final file size is verified.

What to expect

What happens
The video is re-encoded to an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, the most widely playable combination. Bitrate and resolution are chosen from the size budget, and the finished file is measured before you can download it.
Good to know
Reddit may change its limits, and each community decides whether video posts are allowed at all. Reddit re-encodes what it receives, so a clean MP4 at a sensible size keeps the most detail.

Usually it's over 1 GB or 15 minutes, or the community doesn't allow video posts. Compress or trim it here, and check the community's rules.

Reddit re-encodes every upload. Starting from an H.264 MP4 at 1080p or less, within the limit, gives it the least to throw away.
