When something goes wrong

Browsers Studio needs, files that won't add, exports that fail, and how to tell us about a problem.

Studio works on a computer

Studio is made for a computer with a mouse or trackpad. On a phone or tablet it shows a link to send to yourself, and the free tools for a quick trim or compress.

It runs in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. It needs a browser feature called WebCodecs, which recent versions of all four have. If Studio says the browser can't run it or is too old, update the browser and reload the page. In Firefox, if you turned WebCodecs off yourself, set dom.media.webcodecs.enabled to true in about:config.

A file won't add

If Studio can't read a file, it says so in the panel with the file's name.

  • Studio opens the video and sound your browser can play. Most MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, MP3, WAV and M4A files work. A few, such as some HEVC (H.265) videos and HEIC photos, open only in browsers that can decode them: try Safari or Chrome.
  • To bring in a file Studio can't open, convert it first with the free video converter and add the MP4.
  • If your computer's disk is full, Studio can't keep a copy of the file. Free up some space and add it again.

Studio asks for my files

Your files stay on your computer, so on another computer, after clearing your browser's data, or in private browsing, Studio asks you to choose them again. See Projects, saving and your files.

The preview stutters

The preview plays your edit live. On a busy computer, long 4K clips, many rows playing at once, or AI tools still working can make it drop frames. The export is made frame by frame, so it comes out smooth either way. Closing other tabs and waiting for the AI tools to finish helps.

An export fails or is slow

  • Keep the tab open and in front while it exports. Browsers slow down tabs in the background.
  • Try a lower resolution, or Standard quality.
  • If it stops with an error, click Try again. If it keeps failing, tell us (below) and say what you were exporting.

My edits aren't saving

The header says Saved in this browser when Studio can't reach your account, and Not saved when something stopped it. Check your connection. Your edits stay in this browser until they can be saved. See Saving.
